In Pictures: Cannon Street

We last visited the development work at Cannon Street in September last year. Since then, work has continued at the station ahead of a proposed 2011 completion.

Until recently the station was "blessed" with a distinctly 60s Poulson building:


But, as can be seen from the photos below, taken by James R, the station is now a distinctly stubbier affair:



This photo, pieced together by captainben from Skycraper City back in May, gives some idea of what's happening out of public sight:


The end result of the construction process will be an exo-skeletal building, designed by architects Foggo Associates:


The giant X supports and metalwork aren't simply for show - look closely and you'll notice a distinct lack of pillars beneath the structure.

The exoskeleton channels the building load onto concrete foot-pads to the sides, allowing this largely support-free structure (a similar approach to that taken with the Forth Bridge in Scotland).

The design should mark a return to architectural form for the station which, as these final images show, wasn't always as plain as it has recently been:
